Center- Based Child Care Providers

All child care providers in center-based settings must take 45 hours of introductory training in the first year of employment.  The 45 hours of training comes in two parts.  

Part 1: Within 90 days of employment, you must sign up for the 30 hour class.  This class consists of a 20 hour overview of working with young children and 10 hours on behavioral observing and screening of young children.  

Part 2:  Within your first year from your beginning date of employment date, you must  complete part two, which is composed of specialized modules.  You select the best one for you:  Infant/Toddler, Preschool, Schoolage, Children with Special Needs. 

5 Hours of Early Literacy training.  The Department of Children and Families is approving appropriate early literacy courses/programs.    There will also be an DCF on-line course in the future that you can take.  For now, please click on the  Workshops button to see what is being offered in this area.

 Educational Exemptions

If  you have a two year degree or higher with 6 college credit hours in early childhood/child growth and development, or you have a Child Development Associate  Credential, a Fl. state approved CDA equivalent program or CDA Exemption Waiver certificate;

Then, you can be exempt from portions of  Part 1. (Health, Safety and Nutrition and Child Growth and Development and 10 Hour Observing and Screening.  If you have a four degree in-field you may be able to exempt from a 10 hr. module. .

The training coordinating agency will come up.  Click on Training Schedule and find the class you want or need to take and click on the pencil.

Please note that you are not officially in the class until payment for the class is received and you will not be able to attend if you are not on the class roster.  Payment must be received 3 days before the beginning date of the class.

 

After January 1, 2004, you will have to pass a competency test for your training certificate.

10-Hour Annual Inservice Training (As of July 14, 2003)

After the first year of employment, center-based child care providers must complete 10 -hours of inservice each year beginning July 1 and ending June 30.  Subject matter should pertain to working with young children.  The Workshop section of this website provides information on  many opportunities to acquire this inservice training  in our area.  The inservice is documented on CF-FSP Form 5130 in your personnel folder at the child care facility where you work.

Credentialing Requirement

Every licensed child care facility that operates 8 hours or more a week, must have one credentialed person for every 20 children (excluding school-age children) cared for in that facility.  If you would like to be considered a credentialed person for your center you will need to have your director complete CF-FSP 5211 Child Care personnel Education and Employment History Verification Form and send it along with a copy of your credential to:  Education and Training Coordinator, Education Center, 99 Eglin Parkway, Suite #14, Fort Walton Beach, FL  32548.  The Education and Training Coordinator will then issue CF-FSP Form 5206, which is the only form that Department of Children and Families licensing accepts.

Child Care Center Director's Credential

Legislation was passed in Florida during the 1999 session that requires child care and education program directors/administrators of child care centers to have a credential as part of the minimum licensing standards by January 1, 2004.

The administrator is the primary person responsible for the day-to-day operation, supervision and administration of the center.  The assistant director or teachers may also want to seek the credential for future employment in a leadership role.
